The Hands that Built
The Hands That Built
Hand-built from black clay, this large sculptural arch retains the physical evidence of its making — fingerprints, impressions and irregularities remain embedded in its rough surface. Its form evokes shelter: a structure created to offer protection, but also one that speaks to our instinct to shape the world around us in order to make a place within it.
The work reflects on the relationship between human construction and the natural material from which it begins. Clay carries a history that existed long before it reached the hands of the maker; through shaping and firing, that history is altered but not erased. The finished form holds both processes together — the slow formation of the earth and the intervention of the human hand.
The Hands That Built has been submitted for exhibition consideration and is therefore not currently available to purchase.
